2008: What a Season!

The most successful season for Stonehaven Thistle in its entire history? The debate will run and run whether 2008 beats the double, double season of 2001. Certainly the 1st XI finished Grade 1 in 4th place; higher than they have ever done before. At one point they headed Grade 1; another first; anything but "Invisible." The 2nd XI went one better (or was that two) and completed the double in Grade 4 by winning the League Title and Cup; an achievement never before attained, even eclipsing the 2004 season when they won the Grade 4 title.

In 2008 Thistle picked up 7 awards at the ACA Grades Dinner; in 2001 it was 9.

There were so many reasons why 2008 was special, apart from purely results on the field. 2008 saw the most support ever from our Sponsors and no-one can doubt their contribution saw results. The whole Club benefited too with a vibrant energy and passion for the game of cricket which permeated through from the raw talents of the junior sections, to the emerging players in the 2nd XI right through to the "big guns" in the 1st XI where all were urging each other on as one Club.

Such an enjoyable season, played in the correct spirit which even won plaudits from the Umpires. The 7 a side competition for local teams was a big hit and very competitively fought, eventually being won by The Marine Hotel and the now Annual Ceilidh was mobbed with the highest attendance ever as the Club showed off its haul of Silver as well as some dodgy footwork.

Of course there is only one way to settle the running arguments of which season is the most succesful and that is to go one better in 2009.
