About STCC/The current state of play

Founded in 1872, Stonehaven Thistle Cricket Club has been a bedrock of the community ever since. They play in the Aberdeenshire Cricket League with Senior teams in Grades 1 and 3 respectively. Based in the McRobert Pavilion home matches are played at Mineralwell Park. In 2006 our Junior section was reformed to nurture and grow new talent for years to come.

Outdoor Practice
Outdoor Senior practice is on Thursdays
at Mineralwell Park from 6 pm to 8.30 pm.

Starts 8th April 2010

Front row, left to right: Andrew Long, Denis Garden (Vice Captain), Clive Hinchcliffe(Captain), Alex Keith, Andrew Kemp.

Having tasted success in Grade 2 by winning the league and cup double in 2001, Thistle’s 1st XI are now firmly established in Grade 1, with 7th in 2004, and 5th in 2005 after a disastrous start. For 2006, a 6th place after a similarly woeful start saw Thistle gain the reputation of giantkillers, twice beating holders Kintore and their nemesis Cults once. In 2008, Thistle 1st XI finished 4th in the league, having led the Grade in the early part of the season.

1st XI matches are taken seriously, but there is always plenty of banter going on, especially in the changing room and down the pub afterwards. Known to some in the Grades as "Little England", Stonehaven also has several players from around the globe. 1st XI Players

2nd XI

The all conquering 2nd XI of 2008 won both the League and League Cup, so they now find themselves promoted to Grade 3. Target number one must be to stay in Grade 3, unlike their foray into the league in 2005. However hopes are high that the emerging talent will be enough to spring a few surprises on the unsuspecting and there is no reason why they cannot compete for the title.

Front row, left to right: Daniel Colvin, Nigel King (Vice Captain), David Long (Captain), Matthew Colvin, Paul Hay.

The Club now has a good mix of experienced players and younger talent throughout that are approaching their best. The 2nd XI play in Grade 3 of the Aberdeen Cricket Association in both league competition and the league cup.

Although the 2nd XI is often packed with junior players, this is an excellent way to rapidly improve your cricketing skills and get you to a senior playing level quickly. Played in a more relaxed atmosphere, the second XI are nevertheless keen to win or perform well in adversity. 2nd XI Players

Team Selection

STCC Selection Policy Update 2009

The selection policy is currently in transition. However provisional teams are selected 10 days in advance of each match. Therefore to have "your name in the frame" you need to first register on the forum so you can watch the updated lists. You can leave your availability for the next couple of weeks by posting on the forum or contacting the Match Secretary Andrew Long by phone or email.

If there is competition for places, paid up members take priority over unpaid members.

The final team list goes up after practice on the Thursday before the match and is chosen by the selection Committee which comprises:1st and 2nd XI Captains 1st and 2nd XI Vice-Captains and the Match Secretary.
