Walter McLeod
It is with regret that we have learned of the passing of Walter McLeod.
For those that don't know, Walter worked for the Post Office and was a Thistle player for many years. Living in Altens, Aberdeen, Walter and his wife May would make the journey to Stonehaven and "set up camp" at the Cowie for the weekend (where they had a Caravan) so Walter could play cricket for Stonehaven. His name adorns some of our current trophies. He was also one of our Honorary Vice Presidents.
On retirement they moved to Cowie Mill, Stonehaven. May died a few years ago. For those of the younger generation, he was the elderly gentleman with white hair and sunglasses who would come down to watch home matches from the nets, occasionally putting in an appearance at the scoreboard.
Our Club President Andy Wilson had this to say upon hearing the news:
"Very sad to hear the news. Walter was a lovely bloke, I never actually played with him but he was one of Stonehaven's best. Take a look at one of the scorebooks from the 60's and you would see what I mean. He always showed an interest in how we were doing and would point out our deficiencies (in a nice way) when he spotted any."
At the Aberdeenshire Cricket Association AGM on 9th December 2007 a minutes silence was held in a mark of respect for Walter. Our sympathies are extended to his two daughters: Gwen and Susan.
